Dr. Jan Saunders founded the Dayton Sports Medicine Institute in 1994. This marked his return to the Dayton area, having completed a Fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at The American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama; and working with the Trover Clinic Foundation, Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation in Madisonville, KY. Dr. Saunders has served as a team physician, coordinating sports medicine coverage for more than 20 high schools in the Birmingham and Madisonville areas. He also provided sports medicine services for the Birmingham Bulls Professional Hockey Club and Samford University Athletics.
Dr. Saunders is a graduate of the College of Wooster (Ohio), where he played football and wrestled. He received a master's of Science degree from The Ohio State University in biochemistry prior to attending medical school at Ohio University. Dr. Saunders is board certified in orthopedic surgery.
 Other Staff
The Dayton Sports Medicine Institute also employs a number of Athletic Trainers, who provide sports medicine coverage to 7 local high schools. Our certified athletic trainers have worked with athletes at every level of competition, from the adolescent athlete to the professional level competitor.
