 Exercise Physiology
See The Results
Reach your goals with an exercise program designed just for you and your body type.
Fitness Assessments
Assess your current level of physical fitness. Set goals, and develop an effective exercise program. Then you can monitor your progress and make modifications to your exercise program as needed.
Areas measured include:
- Muscular strength- Refers to the maximum force that can be exerted by a muscle group. A maximal leg press is often used.
- Muscular endurance - This is the ability of a group of muscles to exert a submaximal force numerous times. Tests commonly used to measure muscular endurance are push-ups and curl-ups.
- Flexibility - Refers to the range of motion around a joint. Low back pain is prevalent among adults. Much of this problem is related to lack of flexibility in the back of the legs, hips, and lower back. The Sit and Reach test measures your flexibility.
- Body Composition - This is a measure of the relative amount of fat and lean tissue in your body. The skin fold test or bioelectrical impedance analysis will provide an estimated percentage of body fat.
- Blood Pressure- Resting blood pressure is measured

 Stress Tests
Stress Tests, recommended to:
- evaluate aerobic fitness
- aid in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease (CAD)
- assess the safety of
vigorous exercise
- determine maximum
heart rate
Stress testing measures the cardio-respiratory response to progressive physical exertion. The test is based on the premise that a dynamic assessment is more revealing than one conducted at rest.
The test involves walking and possibly running on a treadmill while the electrocardiogram (ECG), heart rate, blood pressure, and perceived exertion are monitored. The workload is gradually increased to volitional fatigue or until abnormal signs or symptoms appear. The Bruce protocol is utilized where the workload is increased every three minutes by changing both the treadmill speed and elevation
Stress tests are conducted by an exercise physiologist with a physician overseeing the test.
ECG Stress Test and Pulmonary Function
Stress testing is helpful in detecting coronary artery disease in persons with an increased likelihood of heart problems (such as middle-aged or older persons with a family history of heart disease, major coronary risk factors, or symptoms). Low aerobic fitness, a blunted heart rate and/or systolic blood pressure, or serious heart rhythm irregularities may signify coronary artery disease.
Maximal time performance on a treadmill can be used to assess physical work capacity and to estimate VO2 max.
Pulmonary function assessment is conducted via spirometry and assesses basic lung function. Forced expiratory volume (FEV) is the spirometric test utilized. The individual performs a breathing maneuver several times through a mouthpiece. The results may indicate lung impairment.
VO2 Max Stress Test
VO2 max is defined as the greatest rate at which oxygen can be consumed during exercise, or the maximal rate at which oxygen can be taken up, distributed, and used by the body during physical activity. This direct measure of oxygen uptake during maximal exercise is regarded as the best measure of heart and lung endurance.
A VO2 max test directly measures oxygen uptake. The individual breathes through a mouthpiece while the nostrils are pinched closed with a nose clip. The Bruce protocol is utilized.
Pre-test Instructions
- Individuals will complete a health/medical history form, exercise profile, and informed consent.
- Appropriate pre-test preparation includes:
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing, socks, and athletic shoes.
- Refrain from eating, smoking, and drinking alcohol and caffeine for 3 hours prior to the test.
- Avoid strenuous physical activity the day of the test.
- Get adequate sleep (6 to 8 hours) the night before the test
